The European Union and China sign an agreement to protect hundreds of Geographical Indications in both territories

The European Union and China close a bilateral deal to protect 100 European Geographical Indications in China, as well as 100 Chinese Geographical Indications in the European Union, against counterfeit and scams. However, the agreement at hand will most likely enter into force only by the end of 2020.

The list of the European Indications of Origin to be protected includes, among many others, the Spanish: Rioja, Cava, Brandy de Jerez, Queso Manchego, Cava, Jerez/Xérès/Sherry y Navarra. The full list is available here: EU GIs.

Moreover, 175 additional names will be considered for protection after the entry into force of the agreement, in order to extend the original list to the new names within the following four years.

The official press release is available on the European Commission website at the following link: EU-China bilateral agreement on IGs protection.
